How to open a bank account, transfer money safely, and protect yourself from fraud.

Bulgaria Now Uses the Euro

Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026. Property prices, bank accounts, taxes and bills are now in euro (€). The old currency, the Bulgarian lev (BGN), has been replaced.

You may still see prices in leva on older listings, contracts and official documents. The fixed conversion rate is 1 euro = 1.95583 leva. If a document shows leva, ask your lawyer to confirm the euro amount in writing.

For UK buyers this means your currency risk is pounds against euros — the same as buying anywhere else in the eurozone.
